pangako sayoPangako Sa ‘yo (lit. I Promise) is a primetime soap opera series produced and broadcast by the Philippine media network ABS-CBN. It is dubbed the first “teleserye” on Philippine television. It starred Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales. The soap, which ran from 2000 to 2002, spanned 476 episodes at 30 minutes each. The series re-aired on ABS-CBN at evening from 2006 to 2007 and on its affiliate TFC. A rerun was aired from March – August 2011 on ABS-CBN, in the late evening timeslot (1:30 A.M. – 3:30 A.M.) every day, with an alternate ending. The series re-aired again in the cable channel Jeepney TVlast October 2012. The show posted an all time high rating of 64.9% during its September 2002 series finale, posting the country’s second highest rating for any episode by a TV series next to Esperanza, and the highest rated finale episode for any Filipino TV series. Directed by Rory Quintos, Dado Lumibao and Olivia M. Lamasan, it is topbilled by Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, Jodi Sta. Maria and Angelica Panganiban. Itserves as one of the influential primetime dramas or Philippine soap operas ever made as it appealed to many audiences in foreign languages. It is popular to many Filipino viewers because of its love triangles between the main characters and the endless love between Amor and Eduardo, Yna and Angelo, and Claudia and Simon. The finale had a power outage as fans rushed home to watch the 1 hour finale and then re-aired at 10:00 PM – 11:15 PM in 2002 and also reaired the finale again on a Saturday at 8:00 PM – 9:01 PM (Philippine Time) which engulfed Filipino viewers as they waited for the powerful moments. It again abruptly was shown on ABS-CBN’S morning timeslot back in 2003-2004 and Pinoy Central internationally as well. The Big News on ABC Channel 5 (later TV5) and The World Tonight on ABS-CBN Channel 2 were the first news programs on Philippine television, followed in that same period by ABS-CBN Channel 9’s Newswatch, which with the transfer of channel ownership to RPN-9 in 1969 would stay on for more years. Channels 5, 7 and 13 tied up for the said project. In the same year, RPN-9 (later Solar News Channel) introduced the longest running and consistently rating sitcom, John En Marsha and the First Family of Philippine television, the Puruntongs. MBS Channel 4 later became PTV 4 (People’s Television) after the EDSA Revolution, and in 2001, it is now known as the National Broadcasting Network (NBN), in turn renamed back to the People’s Television Network in 2011. In 1953, less than a month after the first telecast, Father James Reuter, a Jesuit with radio and television training in the United States, produced the first play on Philippine television entitled Cyrano de Bergerac. The largest cable television provider in the Philippines is Sky Cable Cnd, the Star Awards for Television are the oldest existing television awards in the country handed out annually by the Philippine Movie Press Club and they are voted by the press. Three years later, he was the first to apply for a license in Philippine Congress to establish a television station. James Lindenberg, an American engineer dubbed as the “father of Philippine television,” began assembling transmitters and established the Bolinao Electronics Corporation (BEC) on June 26, 1946.
