Kalyeserye is a 2015 short soap opera parody aired live within the “Juan for All, All for Juan” segment of Philippine daytime variety show Eat Bulaga! onGMA Network in the Philippines and worldwide on GMA Pinoy TV. The mini-show, as it has evolved, focuses on AlDub the fictional couple pairing, or love team as it more commonly known in the Philippines, of Alden Richards andMaine Mendoza‘s character Yaya Dub where the two communicate throughDubsmash and written messages and interact only on the show’s split-screen frame. Alden is located in the Broadway Centrum studio of Eat Bulaga! inQuezon City while Maine is on a remote location.
The 40 minute to 1 hour portion features live improvisation from the AlDub tandem, Wally Bayola, Jose Manalo and Paolo Ballesteros who all play various roles while other hosts of Eat Bulaga! in the studio occasionally comment and interact with the characters. Kalyeserye has elements of comedy-drama,parody, romantic comedy and reality television. According to Anna Leah Sarabia, a Filipino anthropologist, the segment uses fairy tale and soap operatropes. The term Kalyeserye derives from Tagalog words which translates to “street series” in English. It was coined by Joey de Leon, one of the hosts ofEat Bulaga!, to refer to the usual remote setting of the segment. The location outside the studio is usually shot out on the streets of Metro Manila or in theprovinces of the Philippines.
The portion proved to be a success in both broadcast television and social media, resulting in a significant increase of viewership and popularity of Eat Bulaga! on its 36th year in Philippine entertainment.[1] In addition, it has also contributed to the careers of Richards and Mendoza.
